Viva la Vita

I finally picked up the PlayStation Vita before I went on vacation last year and wow am I blown away by this little bad boy. The thing just kicks all kinds of ass. It fixes almost all of the PSP's short comings while offering the best on the go core gaming experience on the market. (although I'm sure the Switch will have something to say about that in the future) The Original model is just fantastic: Proper analog sticks, plus smaller, better buttons, a great D-pad, OLED wonderfulness, front and rear touchscreens. Amazing graphics and a good selection of games. Uncharted, Borderlands 2, Killzone, Unit 13, Jet Set Radio, The Unfinished Swan, Sly Cooper Theives in time, LittleBigPlanet, Rayman, Tearaway. Then there's the smaller, mostly 2D goodness: Fez, Risk of Rain, Super Meat Boy, Steam World Dig, Guacamelee, Velocity 2x, Soldner X 2, Sound Shapes, Bastion, Mutant Blobs Attack, Resogun and SHOVEL KNIGHT. God, Risk of Rain and Shovel Kinght are total revelations there just too awesome to cover in depth right now. Killzone, Borderlands and Risk of Rain still have active servers for online play. Uh, it's just so great so where's the but, well the Vita's basically dead; there won't be anymore big 3D games for it. (there aren't that many to begin with) There are really only 3 games to really take advantage of all the cool shit the Vita could have done. (Tearaway, Uncharted and LittleBigPlanet) The battery life isn't the best. Ps3 streaming only allows you to play PS1 games, Memory cards are too expensive, AGAIN! The hand holds aren't big enough, meaning you accidentally bump the rear touch screen often. Saves are locked within game downloads meaning: a. you have to swap an entire game over to your PS3/ PC to transfer a save to a different memory card meaning that usb cable in the middle of your power cord is fucking useless or b. you have to pony up $60 a year for PS Plus to use cross saving (which doesn't always work) and also that blows, why can't I manually transfer saves SONY? Huh? Because Sony are money grubing little fuckers that's why. Anyways I absolutely love the Vita I keep it downstairs so I can play it after work, then I bring it upstairs at night. I'm currently procrastinating changing the battery as it looks like a pain in the ass, despite all the negatives the Vita is absolutely worth it. A quick word about why the memory cards are so expensive: in order to sell the Vita at the same price point as the 3DS they hide the actual cost of buying the machine by deferring the cost onto the memory to help induce people to buy a much more powerful handheld at a seemingly lower price. This is not unlike when the Ps1 was sold for $299, however once you but a game and a memory card it actually cost $370. While the Saturn came with internal memory and Virtua Fighter for $399, but this deferral of cost tricked people and we all know people are stupid. Oh and anyone reading these: leave comments and let me know if there's anything you want me to post about next.

  1. I want you to give a break down of Shovel Knight! I've never played but I love those types of games.
